Those with more lycopene in their blood also showed slower decline in verbal and overall thinking scores over six years. The numbers were statistically strong, meaning they were unlikely to happen by chance.
A separate study out of Japan tracked older adults over time and found something similar. People with low serum lycopene showed faster decline in attention, measured by a tool called the D-CAT. Lower lycopene tracked with lower scores across several thinking tests. The pattern held even after researchers accounted for other health factors.
Neither study proves lycopene causes better brain health. Both show a strong link between having more of it in your blood and testing better on memory and attention tasks. That distinction matters, and honest researchers are careful not to blur it.
Why Mouse Studies Have Scientists Excited
Animal research offers a clearer, if less directly applicable, picture. Aged mice given lycopene supplements showed real improvement on memory and behavior tests, and lab analysis of their brain tissue confirmed the damage had reversed. Researchers also saw lycopene reduce a toxic protein called amyloid-beta, the same sticky plaque tied to Alzheimer’s disease in humans.
Other mouse research found lycopene switches on a liver-to-brain signaling pathway called FGF21, which appeared to protect against age-related brain decline over three months of treatment. The treated mice showed better mitochondrial energy production and stronger connections between brain cells. Separate work found lycopene calmed brain inflammation by shutting down overactive immune cells.
Rat studies add more support. In diabetic rats, lycopene dosed at levels scaled to body weight eased cognitive decline by improving an enzyme tied to memory function and lowering damaging oxidative stress. These findings build a believable biological story for why lycopene might matter, even though rats and mice are not people.
Where The Evidence Gets Shaky
Not every study lines up neatly. A review of research on lycopene and dementia risk found two separate studies turned up no significant connection at all. Among four studies looking at blood lycopene and existing dementia, only one found a meaningful link to Alzheimer’s-related death. When researchers adjusted their statistics for other factors, the promising trend often lost its significance.
This pattern is familiar to anyone who follows nutrition science. Vitamin E, beta-carotene, and omega-3 fatty acids all generated hopeful headlines from early observational studies, only to underperform once tested in randomized controlled trials. A broad review of 15 such trials found isolated nutrients usually fail to sharply improve cognition in otherwise healthy older adults, though they can help people already at risk of decline.
That history is a useful gut check, not a reason for dismissal. Lycopene has real mechanistic backing that vitamin E claims often lacked. Still, no randomized trial has yet tested lycopene supplements against a placebo in older adults over years, tracking brain scans and memory scores side by side. Until that happens, the tomato-brain connection remains promising, not proven.
For now, the practical takeaway is simple and low-risk. Eating tomatoes, especially cooked with a bit of olive oil to help absorption, fits comfortably inside any healthy diet. Nobody needs a peer-reviewed trial to justify a plate of pasta sauce or a summer caprese salad.
