Researchers from the University of Buenos Aires gave pregnant rats oral doses of DEHP from the first day of pregnancy through weaning. Their male offspring were then tested at 70 days old — the rat equivalent of young adulthood. The results were striking. Rats exposed to DEHP spent less time exploring open spaces and more time frozen or hiding in closed areas of a standard anxiety maze. These are classic signs of anxiety-like behavior in rodent research.[1]
What makes this finding stand out is the timing. The DEHP-exposed rats showed anxiety as adults even though they had received no further chemical exposure after weaning. Lead researcher Dr. Osvaldo Juan Ponzo said the data shows that early-life contact with DEHP “could modify behavior with regard to anxiety, even in the absence of DEHP exposure in adulthood.”[1] In other words, the damage, if that is the right word, appears to be baked in during a critical window of brain development.
How DEHP May Disrupt the Developing Brain
DEHP is an endocrine-disrupting chemical. It interferes with hormones, and hormones play a major role in shaping the brain before and just after birth. A peer-reviewed study found that male mice prenatally exposed to DEHP had fewer neurons in the hippocampus, higher levels of brain inflammation, and lower testosterone. Those mice also showed elevated anxiety and impaired memory.[2] A separate 2024 study found that neonatal DEHP exposure permanently altered stress-response neurons in the brain’s hypothalamus region and raised the stress hormone corticosterone in adult male rats.[5]
That stress-hormone connection matters. When the brain’s alarm system is set too sensitive early in life, it can stay that way. Think of it like a thermostat stuck on high. The rat’s brain, flooded with a hormone disruptor during its most vulnerable window, may simply calibrate its stress response at a higher baseline — and never fully recalibrate.
The Science Is Promising but Not Settled
The honest read of the full literature is more complicated than any single headline suggests. Some studies show DEHP increases anxiety in male rodents. Others show no effect on males, or even reduced anxiety at certain doses.[3] One peer-reviewed study found that perinatal exposure to a phthalate mixture left adult male rats behaviorally unaffected on anxiety measures, while females showed changes.[4] Effects appear to depend heavily on dose, sex, the specific developmental window, and which behavioral test researchers use. That variability does not cancel out the concern, but it does mean “lifelong anxiety from plastic” is a cleaner story than the data fully supports.

There is also the question of what happens when you intervene. In the ENDO 2026 study, rats given gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) agonists or testosterone showed the opposite behavioral pattern — less anxiety, not more.[1] The researcher noted those neuroendocrine changes “can be reversed” by such treatments. That is actually encouraging. It suggests the brain is not permanently locked into an anxious state, and that the chemical’s effects, while real, may be modifiable. The science here is pointing toward a problem worth taking seriously, even if the full picture is still coming into focus.
DEHP Is Everywhere and Exposure Starts Before Birth
DEHP is not some obscure industrial compound. It is used to make hard plastics flexible. It shows up in food packaging, IV bags, vinyl flooring, shower curtains, and children’s toys. Humans absorb it through food, dust, and skin contact. Pregnant women pass it to developing babies through the placenta and through breast milk. The Endocrine Society’s presentation is a conference abstract, not yet a full peer-reviewed journal article, so some scientific caution is warranted. But the broader pattern in the research — across multiple labs, multiple species, and multiple outcomes — points in a consistent direction.
