The study found that children whose mothers took fish oil had slightly lower cerebral blood flow and lower brain oxygen use than children in the placebo group. Another report linked prenatal fish oil to better early language development and fewer emotional and behavior problems, especially in boys. Some older work even suggested higher intelligence scores at four years when mothers took very long-chain omega-3 fats during pregnancy. These are hopeful signals, but they are not universal.

On the other side, some research raises red flags. A follow-up study from a prenatal omega-3 trial reported a higher risk of children being overweight when mothers took these supplements. A major systematic review of omega-3 in pregnancy concluded that, beyond small boosts in birth weight and pregnancy length, there was “no consistent evidence” for better long-term health or brain outcomes in children. When small benefits, small risks, and many “no difference” results all appear in the same field, it becomes easy for experts, companies, and media to cherry-pick what fits their story.

Why This Matters for Families Tired of Guessing

Parents on both the right and the left are weary of health advice that changes every few years while companies profit from the confusion. Fish oil is a perfect example. For decades, medical groups and prenatal brands pushed omega-3 pills as almost a duty for “good” mothers, even while top reviews said the brain benefits were not proven. The new brain scan study confirms that fish oil does do something real in a child’s brain, but it still does not show clear help or harm in everyday life. Many families will hear that as, “Once again, they do not really know.”

This feeds a larger worry that powerful interests rush products to market and then let ordinary people be the long-term test subjects. Regulators and experts often allow strong marketing on thin evidence, then quietly adjust the message when the data fail to back it up.
