The Berkeley Scan That Changed the Debate

Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley put people in a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanner and had them listen to hours of true stories. Later, the same people read those exact stories as text. When scientists compared the brain maps, they found something striking. The patterns of activity across temporal, parietal, and prefrontal regions were nearly identical no matter which format people used.

Lead researcher Fatma Deniz said the finding mattered because so many people now absorb stories through audiobooks and podcasts instead of printed pages. She noted the brain treats meaning the same way regardless of how the words arrive, whether spoken aloud or read silently on a page. That single sentence reshaped how scientists and casual readers alike talk about audiobooks.

Where The Similarities Stop

The overlap isn’t total, and researchers are careful to say so. Reading requires the brain to first decode letters and shapes before it ever gets to meaning. Listening skips that visual step entirely. One brain and behavior expert explained that listening lets the brain jump straight to language comprehension, while reading demands extra work up front to recognize words on the page. That extra decoding step is where print reading builds skills audio cannot touch.

Pacing turns out to be a bigger factor than most people expect. When listeners cannot control the speed of an audiobook, they tend to score lower on comprehension tests and struggle more to draw inferences from the text. Readers, by contrast, can slow down, pause, or reread a confusing sentence whenever they want. That control appears to matter more than the format itself.

What The Larger Research Record Shows

A major meta-analysis pulled together 46 separate studies covering nearly 4,700 children and adults comparing listening and reading comprehension. The overall result found no reliable advantage for either method on average. But when readers controlled their own pace, print reading pulled slightly ahead. That single detail explains why so many smaller studies seem to contradict each other. The advantage depends heavily on how the comparison is set up.

Combining both methods at once does not automatically help. One study built specifically to test reading while simultaneously listening found comprehension actually dropped compared to reading silently. Both pure reading conditions in that study beat listening alone. Harvard child development researcher Nadine Gaab has said the brain networks for reading and for general language comprehension overlap so closely that print books and audiobooks trigger largely the same learning process.

Put together, the research paints a clear picture. Audiobooks are not a lesser form of reading, and print is not automatically superior for understanding a story. What changes outcomes is not the format alone. It’s whether a person controls the pace, stays focused, and gives the material real attention. For busy adults choosing between a paperback and a pair of headphones on the commute, the brain science says either choice can work, as long as attention stays locked on the words.
